Same-Day Pizza Catering: What to Know

April 30, 2026 5 min read

Same-day pizza catering is possible for groups of up to 20-30 people at most pizzerias, including Forni. Beyond that size, same-day orders become difficult because of dough production lead times and oven capacity constraints. If your event is today and you need food fast, here is what to know about placing a last-minute catering order — what is realistic, what to expect, and how to get the best result on short notice.

Can You Get Pizza Catering the Same Day?

Yes, same-day pizza catering is available for groups under 20-30 people. For groups this size, you need 7-12 large pizzas, which a single oven can produce in 30-45 minutes. Call at least 2-3 hours before you need the food. This gives the kitchen time to check dough inventory, slot your order into the production schedule, and prepare for delivery or pickup. Walk-in same-day orders without calling ahead are possible for groups under 10, but calling first is always better.

Last-Minute Lifeline

Same-day catering works for small to medium groups. The key is calling ahead — even 2 hours of notice makes the difference between a smooth order and a stressful scramble.

Why Is Same-Day Catering Limited in Size?

Two factors limit same-day catering: dough availability and oven throughput. At Forni, our dough ferments for 48 hours. We make dough every day based on projected demand, but an unexpected order for 50 pizzas can exceed what we have ready. Oven throughput is the second constraint — our stone oven fires 2-3 pizzas at a time with a 90-second cook time. Twenty pizzas take about 10-12 minutes of continuous firing. Forty pizzas take 20-25 minutes and may conflict with other orders.

Same-Day Catering: What to Expect by Group Size

  • Under 10 people (3-4 pizzas): Almost always available same-day, even with 1 hour notice. This is a standard large order.
  • 10-20 people (5-8 pizzas): Available same-day with 2-3 hours notice. Call first to confirm dough availability.
  • 20-30 people (8-12 pizzas): Possible same-day but not guaranteed. Depends on the day's demand. Call as early in the day as possible.
  • 30-50 people (12-18 pizzas): Unlikely same-day unless you call before 10 AM for an afternoon event. We may need to supplement with other menu items.
  • 50+ people (18+ pizzas): Not available same-day. Dough production and oven scheduling require at least 48 hours advance notice.

How to Place a Same-Day Catering Order

  1. Call the restaurant directly. Do not order same-day catering through an app or online — a phone call lets the kitchen confirm availability in real time.
  2. State your headcount and timeline immediately. "I need pizza for 15 people at 1 PM today" gives the kitchen everything it needs to say yes or no.
  3. Be flexible on pizza types. Same-day orders depend on available dough and ingredients. If they are out of one topping, be ready to substitute.
  4. Confirm pickup or delivery. Pickup is faster and more reliable for same-day orders. If you need delivery, confirm the address and time window.
  5. Pay when you order. Same-day orders are priority — having payment settled removes any friction from the process.

The Morning Call

The best time to call for same-day catering is between 9 and 10 AM. The kitchen knows exactly what dough is available and the day's schedule is still flexible. By 2 PM, most of the day's dough is allocated and options narrow.

When Same-Day Catering Is Not Enough

If your group is too large for same-day catering, consider these alternatives:

  • Split the order between two restaurants. Two pizzerias each handling 15 pizzas is easier than one handling 30 on short notice.
  • Supplement with ready-made sides. Order what pizza is available and add salads, drinks, and snacks from a grocery store.
  • Shift to individual ordering. For office events, give team members a budget and let them order individually. Less coordinated but more flexible.
  • Ask about partial catering. We may be able to provide 15 pizzas same-day even if 30 is not possible. Fill the gap with other food.

Same-day catering is a rescue operation, not a plan. It works for small groups. For anything over 30 people, the best time to order was yesterday.
